There’s no doubt our fashion habits have a serious impact on the environment. Fast fashion is a major contributor to greenhouse gases, water and air pollution, creates problematic levels of waste, and often comes with poor working conditions in other countries. Fast fashion giants like H&M and Zara are churning out clothes faster than designers can send the trends down the runway, for a fraction of the cost, promoting a disposable attitude towards the clothes we buy. It’s a 2.5 trillion-dollar industry and society is consuming it at a rate like never before. Australian’s are the world’s second largest consumers of fashion; we purchase on average 27kgs of new clothing and textiles every year and we’re not slowing down.
So, what’s the solution? We need to stop mindlessly consuming, get educated, and start thinking about fashion consciously to reduce our impact on the environment. In this talk Kira will share: The impacts of fast fashion on the planet and the people making our clothes‚ The complex topic of sustainable fashion and what it actually means, Ways and where to shop ethically and sustainably and How to decipher labels and certifications.
